At 26 years old, I was diagnosed with a tumour on my thyroid.
I remember sitting in the doctor’s office and asking one question:
“Why did this happen?”
There was no history of thyroid cancer in my family, so I struggled to understand how it had happened to me. The answer I received was simple:
“Bad luck.”
While I understand why he said that, something about it didn’t sit right with me. Not because I thought I was to blame. Not because I believed illness is always preventable. But because being told it was simply “bad luck” made me feel completely powerless regarding my own health.
