Bin THESE From Your Kitchen

If you ever feel unsure whether what you’re eating is actually good for you — because of mixed messaging and zero time to research — I’m clearing that up for you today.

Because today I’m breaking down five everyday foods that are marketed as ‘fine’ or ‘healthy’ but are quietly working against your energy, hormones, and long-term health — and I’ll give you the stats to prove it.

If you have any of these in your kitchen, don’t stress. Our bodies are amazing, and damage is reversible with the alternatives I’m going to offer you. I’m here to make your life less stressful, not more.

Let’s start with one that looks convenient but comes with a hidden cost.

🥪 FOOD #1 — Processed Meats

Processed deli meats — things like packaged ham and turkey slices. “I get it. They’re easy. We give them to our kids. They feel like a ‘safe’ protein.

But large bodies of research — including classifications from global cancer research organisations — show that processed meats are associated with an increased risk of colon cancer when eaten regularly.

I’m not telling you this to scare you and if you give it to your kids, all can be repaired with some easy swaps.

👉 Easy swaps (keep it practical):

  • Cook a piece of chicken or ham once a week and slice it

  • Eggs (one of the most nutrient-dense foods you can give kids).

  • Goats cheese, hummus, avocado

  • Leftover dinner protein in a sandwich

One of my best tips? Boil a dozen eggs on Sunday. That one habit saves so many ‘what do I feed them?’ moments.

🥛 FOOD #2 — Low-Fat Milk (and Low-Fat Dairy

If you’ve been taught that low-fat milk is ‘healthier’ or better for weight loss and health — you’re not alone.

Around 70% of women I coach still believe this, and that’s marketing doing its job.

But studies consistently show that full-fat dairy is more satiating, supports blood-sugar control better, and is associated with lower risk of obesity and metabolic issues compared to low-fat versions.

When fat is removed, they often add sugar, thickeners — and your body pays the price.

👉 Swap:

  • Full-fat milk or yogurt

  • Greek yogurt instead of low-fat flavoured ones

🧈 FOOD #3 — Margarine

Margarine is a highly processed fat, often made from refined vegetable oils that are chemically altered.

Research shows these kinds of processed fats negatively affect heart health and raise inflammation.

Meanwhile, real butter does not show the same risks.

👉 Swap:

  • Real Grass fed butter

  • Ghee (great if you’re sensitive to dairy), because it doesn't have much lactose at all.

Now I get it, butter can be really annoying to spread especially if you’re in a hurry, but you don’t need to keep butter in the fridge — just store a small amount in a butter dish and use it within a few weeks.

🌻 FOOD #4 — Seed Oils

Seed oils like canola, sunflower, rapeseed, soybean oil are everywhere: sauces, takeaway, ‘healthy’ snacks.

There is growing evidence linking high intakes of refined seed oils to inflammation and oxidative stress, especially when heated repeatedly.

Traditional fats have been used safely for centuries. Seed oils? They’re a very modern experiment.

👉 Swap:

  • Extra virgin olive oil (for low-heat & dressings)

  • Butter or ghee (for cooking)

  • Coconut oil or avocado oil (for higher heat)

🍞 FOOD #5 — Store-Bought White Bread

This is the one most kitchens have.

Ultra-processed white bread is often packed with preservatives, emulsifiers, and additives designed to extend shelf life — not support gut health.

In a study of over 200 supermarket breads, 84% were classed as highly processed, and research also shows that higher intake of white bread, specifically, is associated with greater weight gain over time compared to wholegrain options.

👉 Better options:

  • Fresh rye sourdough

  • Wholemeal pitta (often also far cleaner than wraps). And yes — pittas are usually a better choice than wraps. Wraps tend to be more processed than people realise.

  • Homemade bread if you enjoy cooking — obviously that’s best but I get it, we’re all tight for time.

If you recognised your kitchen in this video — please don’t panic, the damage is reversible. Start with one swap this week. That’s it.
