A major European study, the EPIC cohort, found that over half of the calories consumed by people across seven countries come from ultra-processed foods (UPFs), items like ready meals, sugary cereals, confectionery, and fizzy drinks (iarc.who.int).
In Europe overall, UPFs contribute approximately 27% of daily energy intake, a number that’s alarming but also helps us understand regional differences.:

Spotlight on Ireland
In Ireland, over half of the average calorie intake—54.9%—comes from ultra-processed foods. That’s one of the highest rates in the EU, topping countries like the UK and Germany.
Back in 2018, research ranked Ireland as the third-highest consumer of UPFs among 19 European nations, with 45.9% of household food purchases deemed ultra-processed, right after the UK (50.7%) and Germany (46.2%).
These numbers show both a persistent trend in high UPF consumption and an upward trajectory over time.
Why It Matters
Higher risk of heart disease and stroke
Higher risk of type 2 diabetes
Higher risk of obesity
Higher risk of early death
Higher risk of cancer (especially breast cancer)
Damages gut health
Linked to depression and anxiety
Fuels chronic inflammation
Leads to nutrient deficiencies
Public Awareness in Ireland
A 2025 PwC survey reveals:
57% of Irish consumers are “extremely” or “very” concerned about the health risks of ultra-processed foods, only slightly lower than the global average (62%).
32% are actively reducing UPF consumption, reflecting growing awareness, though many still face barriers like affordability and access to fresh food.
Quick Comparison Table
What’s the Balanced Take?
Yes, Ireland’s UPF consumption is among the highest in Europe, and that’s deeply concerning.
Yes, higher UPF intake correlates with increased health risks.
Yes, public awareness is growing, but real change requires access, affordability, and supportive policy.
What Can Be Done?
Minimise ultra-processed options where possible, opt for wholesome, nutrient-rich foods.
Support policy shifts that improve labelling, reduce marketing to vulnerable groups, or subsidise fresh produce.
Educate without fear: Empower people to make choices, without sensationalising or vilifying them.
Ultra-processed foods are reshaping Irish diets, and not for the better. But with awareness, better access, and small shifts in daily choices, we can change the narrative.
If you want to feel more energised, reduce cravings, and learn how to fuel your body with whole, nourishing foods, I’d love to support you. Together, we can move away from the cycle of stress eating and processed foods, and build a healthier, more sustainable relationship with food.
✨ Remember: it’s not about perfection, it’s about small, consistent changes.
