Why Fibre is Essential for Your Gut, Your Hormones & Your Weight Loss Goals

Today I want to dive into one of the most overlooked, underrated keys to better health and easier weight loss: fibre!
We often focus on protein, carbs, and fats, but fibre plays a huge role in your digestion, hormone balance, energy levels, and even your mood. Whether you’re looking to support gut health, balance blood sugar, reduce cravings, or improve weight loss naturally, fibre should be on your plate daily.

🌾 What Does Fibre Actually Do?
Fibre is a type of carbohydrate that your body can’t digest. But don’t let that fool you, it’s far from useless. In fact, fibre supports your health in multiple ways:
Acts as a prebiotic, feeding your good gut bacteria
Balances blood glucose levels by slowing digestion
Helps with detoxification by binding to toxins and excess hormones
Reduces inflammation
Keeps you feeling fuller longer, curbing cravings
Regulates bowel movements and prevents constipation
Supports heart health by lowering cholesterol
When it comes to sustainable weight loss, fibre helps stabilise energy levels, reduces overeating, and supports the body’s natural detox processes.
🌿 Not All Fibre Is the Same: Meet the 3 Types
There are three types of dietary fibre, and each plays a different role in your body.
1️⃣ Soluble Fibre – The Balancer
Soluble fibre dissolves in water and forms a gel-like substance in your gut. This slows digestion, keeps blood sugar steady, and helps reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol. Studies also show it can lower the risk of heart disease.
Best sources: Chia seeds, flaxseeds, oats, apples, citrus fruits, legumes (like lentils and chickpeas)
💡 Tip: Add chia seeds to your morning smoothie or overnight oats for an easy fibre boost!
2️⃣ Insoluble Fibre – The Detoxifier
This type of fibre does not dissolve in water. Instead, it adds bulk to your stool and acts like a natural scrubber for your digestive tract. It helps to remove waste, toxins, and excess estrogen, reducing bloating and supporting hormone balance.
Best sources: Brown rice, whole grains, fruit skins (like apples or pears), seeds, and nuts.
💡 Tip: Keep the skin on your veggies and fruits whenever possible for a boost of insoluble fibre.
3️⃣ Resistant Starch – The Gut-Healer
Resistant starch is a special kind of fibre that ferments in the colon, feeding your good gut bacteria. It helps improve insulin sensitivity, supports digestion, and doesn’t spike your blood sugar, making it ideal for those with insulin resistance, PCOS, or digestive conditions like SIBO.
Best sources: Unripe bananas, cooked-then-cooled potatoes or rice, green peas, cannellini beans.
💡 Tip: Make a batch of potato or rice salad ahead of time, cooling them boosts their resistant starch content.
